2017 Tournament Of Nations - Australia v United States

Three New Laws Of The Game To Be Implemented For Matildas Clash Against USA This Friday

Three new changes to the Laws of the Game will be trialed in the Matildas’ friendly clash with the USA on Friday, April 5 (kick off 12.30pm AEDT).

The changes come after US Soccer received the green light from the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to run the changes in the fixture, along with the USA’s other friendly matches in April.

However, they will not officially be instated until the FIFA Women’s World Cup in June.

The new Laws are:

  • A player being substituted must leave the field of play at the nearest point on the boundary line.
  • Yellow and red cards for misconduct can be issued to team officials.
  • On a goal kick and a free kick for the defending team in their own penalty area, the ball is in play as soon as the kick is taken so a player – or opponent as long as they started outside the penalty area or were not given the proper time to exit the penalty area – can play the ball before it leaves the penalty area.
